Cooks ridge hike near Florence, Oregon - part 1 Cooks ridge trail lower trailhead starts at the east end of the upper Cape Perpetua visitor center parking lot and goes east. The upper trailhead is on forest road 55. When I hiked this trail it was a nice cool day, in the lower 60's with a nice breeze, about perfect for hiking. Pearl and I hiked up about a couple of hours, and were feeling hungry, so we stopped and had lunch up the ridge trail about 3.4 miles. We sat there for ten or fifteen minutes to let our stomachs settle, and then we headed back to the trailhead. Total distance was a little less than 7 miles or so. I went to the upper sign, but it's possible to go another mile or two, or for that matter, make a 9+mile loop out of it. The trail for the most part is in extremely good shape and very well maintained. There are signs at every junction, but their meaning may not be clear unless you studied the map at the lower trailhead. Somebody worked very hard to make this a nice trail. It's wide and just very well constructed. All in all it was a very pleasant hike, I would recommend it to anybody who wants to do hikes through the forest. Pearl and I only saw a couple people along the way, but then it was a Thursday, and I suppose the traffic on the trail increases on the weekend days. After the hike, we drove up to the top of the viewing site on cape perpetua and took a few pictures down the coast and into the forest and ocean.
